How do club players choose the right racket and line to improve their game level

At the US Open, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Simona Halep are using Wilson's shiny new Blade v8, Wilson's racket sports senior product manager Michael Schaeffer put forward a unique insight into the development of the Tennis365 framework.

Now in the second part of our interview, Michael looks at the factors that club players need to consider when choosing the next racket:

How important is it to develop a frame suitable for club players and professionals, or their equipment is always slightly different?

We are committed to developing rackets for players of all levels. Our mission is to develop products that help players enjoy the tennis game as much as possible. In many cases, professional players and club players can use the same equipment for a positive tennis experience. On the other hand, professional players and club players have very different pressures on their products, which may lead to different needs. We always recommend that players choose the right product based on their game, not based on the racket used by their favorite player.

When club players want to buy rackets, what is your suggestion to them? What should they look for?

I think it’s important for club players to spend time testing different rackets to understand which racket is best for them. During the demonstration, players can experience and feel the quality of each racket and choose the feel that suits them. "Hand" is the most important quality a player lists when choosing a new racket. It is indeed the best thing to find when testing a racket on the court. Club players should look for a racket that can withstand both weight and balance. It should have the comfort that suits their body, and it should also have the correct balance of power and control suitable for their game and swing speed. All these qualities together represent the "feel" of the racket to the player.

What advice would you give club players about string tension and what type of strings should they use?

Choosing strings is a key element of the equipment selection process. Strings allow players to further customize the feel and performance of the racket to meet their customization needs. Similar to my advice for rackets, the best way to choose a line is to try different line and tension combinations. Once you have a basic understanding of the feel of the racket, you can customize the line selection according to your needs.

What can we expect from the development of racquets...what is the next major development that may change the sport, or have we reached the pinnacle of technology?

Although it seems that we are at the peak of racket technology, there is always more room for innovation. Wilson's Clash, launched in 2019, proved this, which completely changed the way carbon fiber rackets bend. Clash is just the tip of the iceberg in understanding the bending of a tennis racket. Our team has gained a lot of understanding from this project, which will help us to further advance the racket technology.
