Oklahoma Football: Venables' contract details announced

About a week later, Oklahoma announced the details of the contract to bring Brent Venables back to Oklahoma as the team's head coach.

There is a lot of speculation, but thanks to reports from Jason Kersey of The Athletic and Ryan Aber of The Oklahoman, we know the details.

Venables signed a six-year contract, valid until January 31, 2028, with a starting price of $7 million per year and an increase of $100,000 in February each year.

Minor correction: Venables also receives $600,000 in retirement funds each year, bringing his total in the first year to $7 million. https://t.co/DoSw6tQd38

Venables is bringing money to the first head coach. He caused a sensation as the highest paid coordinator in the sport, partly because Clemson has the ability to invest assets to make him an architect of defense, which has been a machine for most of the past 10 years. Clemson paid $2.5 million for Venables' work in the 2021 season.

His nearly $4 million salary increase is not worth watching, but in the long run, Venables is far behind the top five in terms of the highest paid head coach. Back in October, Sooners Wire wrote this article about the highest paid head coach.

This list will undoubtedly need to be updated, because names like Orgeron, Dan Mullen and Gary Patterson are no longer head coaches. Venables will join the ranks of these head coaches. If his head coach salary is on this list, his annual income of 6.4 million US dollars will be slightly higher than Patterson, but behind Ohio State University’s Ryan. Ryan Day's 6.6 million US dollars.

If Venables has any kind of early success, similar to the success of Lincoln Riley in his previous years, based on past precedents, he will see his current contract extended for a few years, which is similar to Oklahoma City’s The way that Massachusetts handles Riley as Oklahoma's head coach is very similar.

It is rumored that Riley's transfer to the University of Southern California's salary is about 10 million US dollars, but it has not been confirmed, and it is reasonable to guess that this will at least exceed the 7.7 million US dollars he earned in Norman this year. Private schools, such as the University of Southern California, do not need to disclose contracts to the public.

If Oklahoma can win the national championship under the leadership of Venables, he will receive a $400,000 prize.

The contract of #Sooners Brent Venables is one of the highest contracts for the first time as a head coach. After more review of the documents, the average annual value of the six-year transaction is $7.25 million, starting at $7 million per year

His contract still needs to be approved by the OU board of directors, who recently met before the completion of Venables' employment.

Although Venables may not earn as much as the former head coach of Oklahoma, it is strongly recommended that Venables negotiate an increase in the budget to recruit his position coach and other staff and other guarantees. Some of these guarantees may seem to include commitments to facility upgrades, recruitment budgets, and off-site support staff.
