Give me a time travel machine and I will type the number 1-9-9-7. September 1997, to be precise: the weekend before the first day of school, I was in a mall in a very Midwestern town in Minnesota. My family and I are choosing shoes for this year, but since I was seven, my feet have grown by an inch approximately every two months, so this won't be the last. But this is the most special one, because my mother bought me a pair of shiny black thick-soled Sketchers. They remind me of the Milky Way and make me feel very cool and special.

Fast forward to now: I am a shopping editor and I try and buy dozens of pairs of shoes every year. I like shoes, but it's hard to find a shoe that inspires the kind of childlike joy you found in the Mall of America in 1997. But, spoiler alert, I did find that pair of shoes recently. In late September, Everlane launched ReLeather Tennis Shoe, a retro-style sneaker made of recycled leather, soft, durable, and absolutely no break-in period.

My ReLeather shoes have been worn for about two months: the first day I wore them, I spent the whole day walking through the apple orchards in the San Bernardino Mountains. I forgot that I was even testing a new pair of shoes. Since then, I have been wearing them when taking my dog for walks nearby, exercising indoors, and running errands. When I needed something simple, they were the first pair of shoes I grabbed and matched everything without forcing me to think too much.

The style of ReLeather Tennis Shoe is very simple: it is a round toe low ankle shoe, you can buy four different colors (I chose white and white with rubber sole, but you can use papaya (yellow)), rubber sole (brown- Beige) or pale pink soles for contrast). These shoes provide good jumping power (but may not provide you with the support you need for fitness sports shoes, or if you need something to run) and maximum comfort. Their dimensions are also real (in my experience).

Everlane also launched ReLeather Court Sneaker, available in six colors, to get a more retro and sports look and feel. It reminds me (from the appearance) of Nike Air Force 1, minus the high top. These ankles are still low, but compared to tennis shoes, you can use the color more fully, and they are slightly thicker. (For full disclosure, I did not test these-but I bought a pair.)
